10 Books That Stayed With Me Longer Than I Expected

Over the past few years, I’ve read hundreds of books. Many of them were fine, but most sounded repetitive after a while. Different words, same ideas.

The books I’m sharing here are different. These are the ones that stayed with me. The ones I still think about long after finishing them. Each of them changed how I see myself, other people, and life in general.

This is not a list of “best books ever.” These are simply the books that changed my way of thinking.

1. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

This book is about presence. About learning to live in the moment instead of being trapped in the past or anxious about the future.

What stayed with me is the idea that most of our suffering comes from our thoughts, not from reality itself. The present moment is calmer than our minds make it seem.

This book taught me to slow down and observe my thoughts instead of being controlled by them.

2. Make Your Bed by William H. McRaven

This is a simple book with a simple message. Small actions lead to big results.

Making your bed every morning will not change the world. But it triggers our brain and reminds us that discipline starts with small, daily habits.

I picked this book because it shows how structure, responsibility, and consistency quietly shape our lives.

3. The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga

This book challenged me the most and very deeply.

It argues that happiness comes from freedom, and freedom comes from accepting that not everyone will like you. It also teaches that we are more responsible for our lives than we want to admit.

What made this book powerful for me is how uncomfortable it is. It doesn’t comfort you. It pushes you.

4. The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida

This book is about purpose, discipline, and masculine energy, but its lessons go beyond gender.

It talks about commitment, presence, and living with direction instead of drifting through life. What stayed with me is the emphasis on truth and responsibility.

It made me think seriously about how I show up in the world and live up to the best I can in my married life.

5. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

This book is simple, easy to grasp and very powerful.

The four agreements are easy to remember, but hard to live by. Be impeccable with your word. Don’t take things personally. Don’t make assumptions. Always do your best.

I return to this book when life feels noisy. It gives me clarity and a lot of calm energy.

6. Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

This is one of the most powerful books I’ve ever read.

Frankl writes about suffering, meaning, and survival after experiencing concentration camps. The book shows that even in the worst conditions, humans still have the freedom to choose their attitude.

It changed how I think about pain and purpose.

7. The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest

This book is about self-sabotage.

It explains how our biggest obstacles are mostly internal. Fear, avoidance, and old patterns quietly hold us back.

I like this book because it encourages self-honesty without cruelty. Growth begins with awareness.

8. Atomic Habits by James Clear

This book changed how I think about small improvements and time management.

It shows that massive change doesn’t come from motivation, but from small systems repeated over time. Habits shape identity.

What stayed with me is how realistic the book is. It doesn’t promise transformation overnight. It teaches patience.

9. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

This book feels timeless.

Written as personal notes, it reflects on discipline, humility, and control over one’s own mind. It teaches you that external events are beyond your control, but your response is not.

I return to this book whenever I need grounding.

10. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

This book is simple, but I think very symbolic and emotional.

It’s about following your path, listening to intuition, and trusting the journey. Some people find it too simple. I find it to be very honest.

It stayed with me because it taught me that purpose is not always logical, but it is deeply human.

These books don't give you answers. They give you better questions.

Most of them taught me discipline. Some of them taught me meaning. Some taught me presence. And all of them taught me how to think.

Books don’t change your life instantly. But the right ones stay with you, quietly and for a long time.

And sometimes, that’s enough.

Thank You for reading :)
